Join Birding Ecosse for a long  weekend at the luxurious Grant Arms Hotel situated in Grantown on Spey, deep in the Scottish Highlands

Arriving on Thursday, we will  meet in the Hotels “Capercaillie” bar at 1730 for a short meet and greet over a couple “local brews” prior to you enjoying your evening meal in the beautiful dining room.

Capercaillie by David Burleigh

An early morning stroll around my local Forest gives you a great chance of seeing the extremely rare Capercaillie, with a strong chance of Crossbill as well, it is a great way to start the day!

Next is the local dune system looking for early summer migrants arriving fresh from their travels and trying to replenish their fat reserves prior to the vigours of the upcoming breeding season,  then to end the day  a visit to a river estuary to look for summer plumaged waders getting themselves ready for their trip North to their breeding grounds

Yellow Browed Warbler, a real possibility on todays trip.

Today we head North to a migrant Hot Spot, last year it turned up no less than three Yellow Browed Warblers, Lesser Whitethroat and a host of common migrants. The area also boasts some fantastic sea watching so we will be keeping our eyes peeled for some unusual Shearwaters and Gulls!

Black Throated Diver

Today we stay inland, once again searching for newly arrived migrants and breeding residents returning to their breeding grounds, like the Black Throated Diver pictured above. The local Slavonian Grebes should be back on a local fishing lochan, and by booking in  at the Grant Arms Hotel you get exclusive use of the BWWCs very own hide, be prepared for some stunning views!  Finally a trip to Raptor valley should not only provide views of Golden Eagle, but we may be lucky enough to catch up wth a newly arrived Ring Ouzel.

Give yourself a treat!  Enjoy a long lie before you head down for your last breakfast at the Grant Arms. Sit back and enjoy the memories of the past three full days birding in the glorious Scottish Highlands, and start planning your next trip North!
