Day tours

Bird watching in Scotland at any time of the year is an exciting prospect.  Every season has its own special birds, weather and atmosphere. Below are examples of our most popular bird tours.

Long Tailed Duck

Long Tailed Duck

Visiting the coast on a birding tour in Winter is a treat to the eye, with thousands of sea-ducks using the shallow bays to escape from the worst of the winter storms.  Long Tailed Ducks arrive from their arctic breeding grounds in their thousands as do Common and Velvet Scoter. With luck you may even stray across some rare visitors such as Surf Scoter, Brunnichs Guillemot or even a fine male King Eider.

Grouse Moors

Grouse Moors

Spring is the season it all starts!  A tour onto our local moors reveals the amorous side to one of our most beautiful  game birds, the Black Grouse.  Arriving in the early hours just after dawn you are greeted by the soft bubbling calls of the males at their “lek” the traditional mating arena.  Watch as they poise and pose at other males trying to catch the eye of a passing female.

After this you may choose to visit the Glens in search of the majestic Golden Eagle, watch as the males go through their display flights and the immature birds wrestle in the sky with each other trying to prove who owns this patch of land!

Sandwich Tern

Summer is a busy time for all birds, the adults striving to feed their hungry broods.  Back on the coast you will see the “swallows of the sea”  the graceful Terns as they dive bomb into the water  catching sand eels to take back to their chicks.

Gannet

Gannet

Another diving specialist is the Gannet and a trip to a breeding colony is always high on a visitors “must see” list. A beautiful scenic walk leads to towering cliffs and here you can get stunning views of adults and juvenile birds sitting on their nesting ledges.  A fantastic day out.

Autumn is a delightful season with an odd mix of lingering summer migrants bumping into early returning winter migrants.  Swallows flitting through fields of Pink footed Geese is always a sight worth seeing!

Puffin

It also is the season for some of our longer day trips, a ferry crossing from Ullapool to Stornoway gives you the perfect chance to see a myriad of seabirds, Manx and Sooty Shearwater, Storm and Leach’s Petrels, Black Guillemots plus a host of sealife such as Dolphin, Porpoise and perhaps even Minke Whales

Whether you have a full day to bird, just a morning or afternoon spare, then be assured here at Birding Ecosse we can ensure your time is utilised to the max!
