Join Birding Ecosse for a long weekend at the luxurious Grant Arms Hotel situated in Grantown on Spey, deep in the Scottish Highlands

Thursday 23 June 2016

Arriving on Thursday we will meet in the Hotels Caprcaillie Bar for a short “meet and greet” over a few local brews before you sit down to enjoy your first meal in the beautiful Dining Room.

Friday 24 June 2016

We start the weekend with a bang!  Well maybe more of a guttural “caw” as we head off to the beautiful Handa Island.  Situated on the far North West coast of Scotland we will drive through some stunningly beautiful scenery before reaching our destination.

Dark Phase Arctic Skua

Dark Phase Arctic Skua

Get up close and personal, and I mean very up close and personal with the Breeding Arctic and Great Skuas (Bonxies in local parlance) witness the sights, sounds and for me the best bit, the smell of a seabird colony in full swing! Thousands of Guillemots and Razorbills jostle for position on the cramped sea cliffs and not forgetting the jaunty little Puffins, everyones favourite!

Target Birds for today: Arctic and Great Skua, Puffin, Black Guillemot and pure blood Hooded Crow and Rock Dove

 Saturday 25 June 2016

It’s mountain day today (done the easy way!) After visiting the hotels exclusive hide in search of one of the Scottish classics the Slavonian Grebe, we head to the mountain tops in search of another iconic bird the Ptarmigan.  After lunch it is off to Eagle country and the possibility of both Golden and White Tailed Eagle.  Add to this Mountain Hare, Red Deer and Feral Goats it really is a brilliant full day in the field.
Target birds for the day: Ptarmigan, Slavonian Grebe, Golden and White Tailed Eagle.

Sub adult Gannet

Sub adult Gannet

Out before breakfast to visit a local Black Grouse Lek, listen to the haunting Bubbling cooing call as the male “struts his stuff” in the hope of attracting a mate, we then return to the hotel for a celebratory breakfast before setting out to visit the Southern side of the Moray Firth.  Habitats we will visit include River Estuary, Freshwater Loch and a variety of coastal habitats.

Target Birds for today: Black and Red Grouse, Gannet, Kittiwake, Sandwich Tern, Arctic, Common and Little Terns.
