Join Birding Ecosse for a fantastic  weekend at the luxurious Grant Arms Hotel situated in Grantown on Spey, deep in the Scottish Highlands

Arriving on Thursday afternoon, why not settle in over  couple “local brews” in the Hotels superb Capercaillie bar prior to you enjoying your evening meal in the beautiful dining room.

King Eider Male

King Eider Male

Today we spend on the stunning Moray Firth, starting at a lovely enclosed River estuary we will get some stunning views of the thousands of wintering wildfowl, a large gull roost where in 2017 Glaucous, Iceland and Mediterranean Gull all made an appearance  Wigeon, Teal and perhaps some Pale Bellied Brent Geese. Waders are usually plentiful here with Bar Tailed Godwits and Sanderling being star birds.

Off- shore we can pick up Common and Velvet Scoter, flocks of Beautiful Long-tailed Ducks and who knows the now annual “Elvis” the King Eider may grace us with his presence.

Our next stop is a beautiful inland Loch where we will scan from the hide looking for the local Water Rails, over the past few years these birds numbers have increased and now show regularly at a feeding platform.  Our final stop is the internationally important intertidal bay where we will witness the huge skeins of geese wiffling above our heads as they return to roost after a day busy feeding in the nearby fields.

Snow Bunting at Cairngorm

A beautiful Snow Bunting

Ever fed a Coal Tit from your hands? Well today could be the day as we head to a local pine forest and see if we can entice the elusive Crested Tit  to put in an appearance, you wont get a better chance than this! Then it is onwards and upwards as we head up Cairngorm using the spectacular Funicular railway in search of Ptarmigan and Snow Bunting (weather permitting)  Final stop for your first day is Raptor valley, an ideal location for both Golden and White Tailed Eagles.  A fantastic first day!

Greater Yellowlegs

Greater Yellowlegs

Today is North (not quite to Alaska!) to the Beautiful Loch Fleet, taking in Brora, Golspie and Embo.  March is the beginning of Spring for Birding Ecosse, so who know what will turn up, 2017 had my First Sandwich Tern of the year plus Osprey and Black Redstart in the area or even  another Greater Yellowlegs perhaps?  If not we can expect some more unusual commoner birds, flocks of Twite, over wintering Greenshanks and Auks and Divers out to sea, a brilliant way to round off your long weekend!

Give yourself a treat!  Enjoy a long lie before you head down for your last breakfast at the Grant Arms. Sit back and enjoy the memories of the past three full days birding in the glorious Scottish Highlands, and start planning your next trip North!
