Nest Gannets at Troup Head

Nesting Gannets at Troup Head

Today we head along the beautiful Moray Coastline, where we shall take a walk out to the RSPB reserve of Troup Head to witness one of natures greatest spectacles, a breeding colony of Gannets.  Get up close and personal with these stunning birds as they come and go on their daily routine. The sounds sights and of course the smell will live long in your memory! With supporting cast of Puffin, Kittiwake, Guillemot and Razorbill it really is a Seabird City!

Our return to the hotel will take in a selection of important stop offs searching for breeding Black Guillemot, feeding Osprey and perhaps even some Bottle Nosed Dolphins!

Thursday

Up and out early today (so perhaps have one less Malt at the bar the night before!) and we will find ourselves on a beautiful remote Scottish Grouse moor watching the thrilling spectacle of a Black Grouse Lek in full swing, the males “strutting their stuff” in the hopes of attracting a beautiful female (I have tried the same moves on my good lady but just ended up putting my knee and back out!)  Then it is back to the hotel to fill up on a hearty breakfast before heading off for the day.

First stop is a picture perfect Scottish Loch, complete with ruined castle and a fantastic history, but more importantly it has been the recent breeding grounds for a rare British Breeder, the Black Throated Diver.  These birds can be seen at quite close range from the public highway so no disturbance is involved, so photographers get your big lenses ready!

Next stop is the BWWCs very own exclusive hide, built on a serene fishing lochan this is also home to a rare breeder and Scottish Highlands speciality, the stunning wee Slavonian Grebe, once again the welfare of these extremely rare birds always comes first and so watching from the security of the hide we can observe these delightful birds at close range.

Finally it is off to the Glens. At this time of year alive with newly arrived Summer Migrants, Redstarts, Willow Warbler and the charismatic Ring Ouzel, the mountain Blackbird.

But target bird for the day is undoubtable the majestic Golden Eagle, we will scan the skies in search of one of these magnificent birds as they hunt for food, we also stand a very good chance of picking up the even larger flying Barn Door!  The White Tailed Eagle.

A great day in the field and a possible list of birds that will be the envy of your friends!

 Friday
