Join Birding Ecosse for a long  weekend on the stunning Outer Hebrides

The Uists and Barra

Thursday 08 to Wednesday 14 September 2022

** Sorry this tour is now full for 2022 **

The magnificent Grant Arms Hotel, Grantown on Spey

September is a  month for visiting the beautiful Outer Hebrides if you are looking to connect with a rarity.  Many North American birds arrive on the islands, their first landfall if they have been blown off course at this time of year on migration.  On this exciting trip we will be searching for Vagrant Gulls and Passerines, alongside the home grown talent of Golden and White Tailed Eagles, Hen Harrier and Short Eared Owls, Twite and a whole host of waders.  Just writing this is making my heart race and my mind wander to the beautiful Outer Isles!

Thursday- Arrival day

Arriving on Thursday afternoon why not sample a few “local brews” in the hotels superb Capercaillie bar before settling down to you enjoy evening meal in the beautiful dining room.

Travel Day – Grantown on Spey to North Uist

Travel day today, so up bright and breezy prepared for the Scenic drive to the Isles, heading up through the Highlands we have plenty stop offs on the mainland and the Mystical Isle of Skye, talk about a stunning commute!

Taking a slow drive through the Scottish Highlands we stand a great chance of some great birds, in 2021 we found a Yellow Browed Warbler on Skye and a stunning White Tailed Eagle flying over a remote lochan

Arriving at Uig we set sail to Lochmaddy to begin this mega exciting trip (we have our evening meal on the Ferry crossing as we arrive late at the hotel – I highly recommend the Fish and Chips! This of course is included in the tour price)

And so the weekend begins, the actual itinerary will be weather dependent, however as guidance what the plan will be is:

Our step off point to Barra – the stunning Isle of Eriskay.

This morning we will set off for a day trip to Barra, sailing from Eriskay to Ardmhor, a short 45 minute crossing. We will then spend the day exploring this exciting location, one of my own personal favourites, but don’t worry even I cannot get lost….. there is only 1 road!

At this time of year we will be searching for migrant as the may their way south for the winter, in particular vagrants that have been blown well off course, Recent Septembers on Barra Have turned up, Barred Warbler, Red Backed Shrike, Booted Warbler, Yellow Browed Warbler, Red Breasted Flycatcher, and Blue Winged Teal to name a few.

North Uist and Berneray

Today will be exploring North Uist and Berneray, fantastic habitat unlike any on mainland UK.

After a hearty breakfast we will be traversing the moors on North Uist (by car) a hot spot for Raptors, and with good luck we will encounter Short Eared Owl (although at this time of year the Owls tend to keep a lower profile than on our spring and summer tours) Hen Harrier, two of the iconic species of the Islands, with a high chance of both Golden and White Tailed Eagle, where else can you encounter these birds right after your porridge! (other breakfast options are available)

Short Eared Owl

White Tailed Eagle Anyone?

The Machair will have stopped flowering at this time however the short grass is an inviting feeding area for returning waders, the sea weed strewn beaches nearby also providing a major buffet table for hungry bills! We will spend plenty time scanning the fields, bays and sea for any unusual arrivals, Buff Breasted Sandpipers are almost an annual occurrence with 2019 turning up three together! Whimbrel, Ruff and Black Tailed Godwit should also be easily seen

 The Stunningly beautiful Uists

Benbecula and South Uist.

On today’s outing we will complete the Islands by visiting Benbecula and South Uist.

South Uist is home to one of the best sea watching locations on the Hebrides and we will take full advantage of the setting! Gulls, Skuas, Divers, Shearwaters, Auks, Petrels, Sea Ducks are all possible adding to the list for the weekend.

Travel Day – North Uist to Grantown (via Skye)

Today we bid farewell to the Uists and set sail back to the Mainland, giving a fantastic opportunity for some sea watching en-route. Auks of all shapes and sizes will be rafting on the water, once again we will have plenty of opportunity to stop off at various locations on Skye, en-route back to the Grant Arms Hotel.

***All this for only £1250 per person!***

Points to note: Due to location of the Uists the weather can be very variable at this time of year… well to be honest it can be variable anytime of the year!  To that extent bring plenty of layers of clothing, especially a good waterproof outer layer, also include hat and gloves as it could get chilly in the breeze.

Please let me know if you have any special food requests. ie Gluten Free/Vegetarian/Vegan.  Also your preference for drinks Tea/Coffee/Decaff/Herbal cold drinks etc.  This will allow me to stock up prior to the Uists where shops are limited.
