At Birding Ecosse we believe that all our guided tours should be informative, relaxed, and informal but most of all…… fun!
Below are some comments and pictures of our recent clients:
Thank you so much for taking us out in the highlands! Every time someone has asked what the highlight of my trip was, my answer is always the day we spent birding with you!! AJ Aug 24
Hi Dave,
Just wanted to say thank you so much for the amazing day out birding. My Grandpa (Michael) and I both absolutely loved it. My highlight was the osprey diving into the river and the golden eagles. Thank you for all the teas, cokes and biscuits as well, and for sharing all your knowledge. I have been on the lookout for birds since and am ( I hope) getting better at spotting and identifying them! Thank you for the amazing book as well. It has already helped me a lot and I keep it in near the window where you can watch the bird feeders from. Again thank you so so much and hopefully we will see you again soon. HB and MC Aug 2024
We enjoyed two excellent days “birding” with Dave. We spent one day on the north east coast – with Brora as our most northerly destination. The second day was spent looking for highland birds from Grantown-on-Spey to Aviemore and many destinations in between. We saw 70 species in two days including rarities such as the little gull and Slavonian grebe. We saw 5 birds of prey, but missed out on both the golden eagle and the white tailed eagle – two good reasons to return in the near future.
Dave is hugely knowledgeable, both about the individual species, but almost more importantly where to observe them. He also provides information on Scottish history, landscape and vegetation – a veritable font of knowledge. We felt we were very well looked after. Dave is very professional and excellent company. We would highly recommend booking with him. J&J H
Thanks again Dave for returning me to the airport – and for everything. Not just for taking us to those prime birding sites but also for the luxurious travel – ie comfy car, regular coffee & choccy biscuits, local info, regular stops, cheery company…. And yes, I’m definitely happy with the WTEs, plus all the other birds we saw! A fantastic experience. Thank you JA July 23
Sandy, Ian and Jenny on the Bealach na ba.
Just a short note to thank you again for the fantastic bird watching break you provided. You actually exceeded my expectations and your light refreshments of tea, coffee and huge variety of chocolate biscuits made it really an enjoyable experience.
If I get the chance to recommend Birding Ecosse to any of my birdwatching friends, then I shall have NO hesitation in doing so. You deserve to have a successful business. TL June 23
Just a quick note from us to say thank you for a fantastic day yesterday – we had a brilliant time. Your knowledge and sense of fun were perfect – you provide a wonderful service and we will be back (that is both a threat and a promise!). N&S May 23
Many thanks for a brilliant trip to the Uists – very enjoyable with a nicely arranged (obviously!!) close-up of the bird I really wanted to see (I think ‘stonking view’ is the technical term). Mind you, the phalarope was running it very close in 2nd place. Lots of good birds with some humour thrown in too! Organisation and accommodation excellent with the added bonus of a couple of Lorne and Black Pudding rolls! I’ll put a review on TripAdvisor soon. Hope to be back for my fourth trip soon (aiming for a winter visit). Thanks again, RC May 23
A Big Day Tour with Dave was a great day out and an incredible experience overall. A wonderful retirement present. Most importantly, we had great views of a range of birds (including Slavonian grebes and black throated divers, both with chicks) in a variety of less well-known habitats which was enhanced greatly by Dave’s highly entertaining and knowledgeable chat.
This trip has to be strongly recommended and I intend to repeat the experience later this summer. Thanks Dave.

Hi Dave,
Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our day with you on Friday. Quite a few big ticks including the crossbill, goshawk and golden eagle. Thoroughly enjoyed your company and Shirley particularly appreciated your “holistic approach” to wildlife viewing with photo stops for the stags, hare and sika deer!! G&S Mar 23
Hi Dave
Many thanks for a brilliant two days, enjoyed the birding and the laughter. Hope to see you next year. A&J Oct 22
The Grant Arms is an excellent base for the tour and, as a bonus, puts on some interesting evening presentations. Food is very good, not to say plentiful.
Lastly, Dave is a great host and wasn’t slow to put on a brew and hand out the cakes at the various stops. I think we did test his patience in pointing out that the English have tea in the afternoons, coffee only in the mornings. That set the tone for the banter for the rest of the weekend at which he showed that he can both dish it out and take it. I’m sure we’ll be back (if he’ll have us!).
My third trip to the Outer Hebrides/Skye with Birding Ecosse and sixth birding adventure since 2017, including a week in Andalusia. There is no better recommendation than repeat trips between my home in Florida and Grantown-on-Spey, base camp for BE excursions.
This time we were four birders, all familiar to one another from previous outings with Birding Ecosse CEO/Authoritarian David Slater, aka Darth Birder. We all ticked “life birds” during five days in the Western Isles. One was the Corncrake that David located on Barra in the high grass near the road through Borve. We heard the distinctive “krek-krek,” walked quietly toward the sound and were soon rewarded with good views of the elusive but vocal summer visitor. Residents of a nearby home told us that Corncrakes vocalized through the night and the charm had worn off some time ago.
Any trip to Barra must include the exquisite Isle of Vatersay. Turquoise waters lap quartz sand beaches where gulls and terns and shorebirds abound.
After the return ferry to Eriskay we headed north to Benbecula where Red-necked Phalaropes were reported. It wasn’t long before we saw two in a shallow fresh water pond. Again a “lifer” for all except Darth, they are surprisingly small shorebirds with a distinctive spinning action on the water.
The trip that day from North Uist to Eriskay ferry dock also provided six sightings of Short-eared Owls and a male Hen Harrier at his ghostly best.
For five days we visited wetlands and beaches and bays and lochs, always seeing something of interest. Many Common Eiders, Lapwings with chicks, Dunlins with chicks, some 500 Mute Swans near Eochar, Arctic Terns, Great Skua, Red-throated Diver, Puffins, White-tailed Eagles, Stonechat, Wheatear and many ducks and shorebirds and gulls. Oh, and otters, common seal, grey seal, red deer and roe deer.
Birding Ecosse makes all of this happen with effortless good humor and a layer of snark. Sign up with Darth and your adventure usually starts at the fine Grant Arms Hotel in Grantown-on-Spey. (See my recent TripAdvisor Grant Arms review.) From there you can do a series of day trips to the always productive Moray Coast or the Black Isle or the West Coast/Gairloch. Or wherever you would like. David will tailor a birdng excursion to your geographic preference or to a particular species. Trips to the Western Isles like my most recent include accommodation at a small hotel with excellent meals included. And the added attraction of birding on Skye on the way to and from the ferry at Uig. This trip included time on the spectacular Waternish Peninsula and some good seabirds and otters at Ord on the Sleat Peninsula.
The Birding Ecosse vehicle, the Flying Pig (ref Pugwash; long story,) is cleverly outfitted to provide coffee or tea, biscuits and/or fresh fruit. Darth puts on his barista hat and mans the scope simultaneously. These breaks are particularly enjoyable while watching an Osprey nest or dozens of waders or Slavonian Grebes on a quiet loch.
Never more than four in a group, BE books up quickly, so get to it. You will not regret it. The bad jokes, maybe, but he makes up for it with superior birding.
Highly recommend this trip – I’m no expert so I learnt so much in such a short time.
Lochluichart (coffee watching the Osprey Nest)
Gairloch – High viewpoint where we had the Hooded Crows
Poolewe – Lunch stop
Aultbea – Terns on the pontoon
Gruinard Bay – Anthrax IslandThen home via Dundonnel – Aultguish then the main Ullapool road.was a fantastic shore bird day….my wife and I don’t keep life lists – but we love getting out and taking pictures and learning. Dave is a great guide – with a great sense of humor…..the groups are small – his ford SUV only holds 4 max….we were a trip of three…..Dave brought coffee/tea and snacks – and we brought our own lunch….first stop was on some nesting osprey – which was cool (but we are from Cape Cod and Osprey are like robins here during the summer!)….neat to see they are making a comeback in Scotland too….lots of potential bathroom breaks too – so the trip is very comfortable!Dave has a pair of really nice swarovski scopes – and an extra pair of swarovski binocsDave is very knowledgable – and knows where to look! we’ll be back for sure. Thanks Dave!
Have just spent three excellent days birding with Dave Slater. He is a great spotter and has excellent knowledge. He persevered in a hail storm to ensure we saw a King Eider.
We will definitely go back and use Dave again. He is also great fun. No hesitation in recommending him as an excellent guide. J&C March 2022
Dave Slater gave we four an excellent birding experience.Over three days he took us to the sites where he knew we would see the birds we wanted to see. He did all the driving ,provided coffee and kept us amused for three days.He is an excellent guide with a depth of knowledge second to none. TC March 2022
A great two day trip. We enjoyed a fantastic ferry crossing from Ullapool to Stornoway with lots of sightings and beautiful weather. Our second day was very enjoyable too with lots of sightings including some Golden Eagles and a very handsome Red Squirrel. Dave was very knowledgeable and great company. I really enjoyed the trip and definitely hope to go again. VM Oct 2021
Dave is incredibly helpful and passionate about wildlife with clear in depth knowledge. Book very early to avoid disappointment. C Oct 2021
Yet another couple of days outing with Dave. As always he didn’t disappoint! With 3 lifers on the first day I’m not complaining. Multiple outings over the last 10 years and the birds are just as spectacular and the banter just as entertaining. We will be back G&J Oct 2021
I just wanted to say thank you so much for the 2 days we spent with you. I know Phil thoroughly enjoyed his birthday present and I have to admit so did I.
We have just arrived home and unpacked and will be looking through all our photos and videos from the trip wishing we were back in Scotland. T&P July 21
Hi Dave. Just arrived back home after a good journey. Just picked up your message and the super pictures. Thank you so much for those.
I also really enjoyed the day birding with you, I shall always treasure the memory seeing the osprey chicks and ring ouzel fledglings, not to mention black throated diver!!.
Thank you again for a super day.
Warmest regards. E June 21
Hi Dave
Thanks so much for a wonderful day. Your relaxing style along with your in depth knowledge and bird spotting brilliance ensured we had such a successful day. The ‘lifers’ just kept coming as well as unexpected surprises of seeing more familiar birds close up. E&S June 21
Hi Dave, Just to say thanks so much for a fantastic day. The day flew by and was over far too quickly. Thank you for persevering with the eagle – it topped off the day perfectly. E&P June 21
Thanks so much for making our trip so special. We both enjoyed it no end, and great to get difficult to find species. I must say it was very pleasant meeting you and sharing our time together. S & S June 21
As soon as Dave arrived to pick my wife and me up for the day with a broad grin, a pack of Tunnocks and a comment on the glorious Scottish weather (it was late May, 7 degrees and drizzling), I knew we were going to get on just fine. Just as long as we see a Crested Tit, I told him, your fee is safe. But Dave is not one for making rash promises. ‘You’re here at the worst possible time to see Crested Tits,’ he told me. ‘They’re either inside a nest hole or foraging high up in the pine canopy.’ N&P May 21
Despite the atrocious weather we had a grand day out with him and notched up some 55 species, including gorgeous Black-throated Divers and Slavonian Grebes and even a brief glimpse of a Golden Eagle, long enough to establish it was no ‘tourist eagle’. Dave was an excellent and informative guide and kept us in high good humour throughout. Even though he was right about the Crested Tits.
Hi Dave,
Thank you very much for an excellent day’s birdwatching yesterday, and
for particularly sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with us, which
meant that both Eric and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We feel that
we were very fortunate that you were able to show us so many raptors and
explain what we should be looking for in order to ‘try’ and identify
them. I only hope I can remember some of it, and we are looking forward
to getting the photo of the white tailed eagle as an a reminder. G & E Sept 20
If you want to enjoy a really good day out with a guide who is not only very knowledgeable, good at explaining bird identification but great fun.A maximum of four people only are taken out in a comfortable roomy vehicle. You are given hot drinks and cakes during the day
Hi Dave
Just a quick note to thank you for a very interesting, entertaining and informative couple of days. I thoroughly enjoyed it and added a few more birds I haven’t seen at all, or hadn’t seen in the UK. That’s always good, even if your main interest is in the overall ecology, as mine is. The woodcock were definitely a highlight, as was the eagle.we’re certainly looking at another trip! CB Nov 19
Dave and Lynda, We very much enjoyed our birding in Spain. We enjoyed meeting you and the group of veterans from UK and Scotland. Thanks for making us feel welcome! We liked the late start, the coffee break before birding and the lunch break at local restaurants. The Sol was a great base and the meals were very convenient. We appreciated that everything was organized for us.
We hope to join you in Scotland at some point and you know you are welcome here should you visit the States. D&A G Oct 2019
Dear Dave
Having taken stock of my most fulfilling time with you two weeks ago it is time to share reflections . Apart from the 84 species I was able to tick ,
about 20 or so being new to my yearly list , I enjoyed being taken to some different sites across a wider area.
Thanks for your patience and helpful assistance with some ids – avidly noted by me I can assure you . Not least , all your relevant banter on the places visited added to the days out . RH Sep 19
First morning on North Uist, headed south to Eriskay, within minutes we had a long look at a nearby Short-eared Owl soaring over fields and directly over our heads. For the next three days we were stalked by SE Owls. From Lochboisdale to the Berneray Causeway, we had so many sightings we lost track in double digits. And these were extended, leisurely fly-bys and fly-overs. Once the owl was accompanied by a male Hen Harrier.
This was my second trip to the Uists with David Slater and Birding Ecosse. I now better understand why David names the Uists as one of his preferred birding destinations.
Stunning white sand beaches with turquoise water yielded cooperative and numerous shorebirds. Fifteen waders one day including my favorite Grey Plover and the slender and lovely Ruff.
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Our route from Grantown-on-Spey to the ferry at Uig included a side trip to the Sleat Peninsula on Skye. We stopped at Ord, waterside birding, the Cullins in the distance, while barista David made tea and coffee within his well-equipped vehicle, fondly known as The Flying Pig. Lunch al fresco while picking up Eider, Grey Heron, Gannet. Also Stonechat and Wheatear.
Waiting for the ferry, in the hills above Uig, a Golden Eagle flew right at us from a ridge line. As he circled above, another appeared and joined the display. Then a third appeared. For five minutes we got looks close enough to determine that the third was an older bird with scruffy wing feathers and a wounded foot.
Evening ferry to Lochmaddy, after dinner pelagic birding included Arctic and Great Skuas, Kittiwake, Fulmar, Manx Shearwater, Storm Petrel and dolphins.
Off the ferry as light faded and returned to the comforts of the Temple View Hotel in Carinish. How could it get any better?
The reliable Short-eared Owls were our totem for this visit. The beaches at low tide featured wall-to-wall waders and gulls and terns. Finches, thrushes, a Corn Bunting, swans and various ducks added to our fun.
David knows the Uists well. When he ventures down single-track roads along the coast and into the hills we are all on alert knowing that there’s a good reason he slowed down. Greenfinch? Twite? Short-eared Owl?
Once back in Grantown we had another day out in the Cairngorms. Since my first Highlands birding in 2016, never got a Dipper. David took us to the lovely gurgling Divie River, no Dipper but Long-tailed Tit and various cousins. Aptly named Dipper Bridge in the Strathdearn Valley presented my elusive Dipper. Yay. At Lochendorb, a preening Black-throated Diver came close to our viewing spot affording great looks. Avielochan gave us a Slavonian Grebe chick, many Golden-eyes and the always busy Little Grebe.
All of this is great fun and accompanied by good humored commentary. When you are confined to a car (even the Flying Pig) for long spells, it is important that our birding obsession be leavened a bit. David will find a way to make even the most ardent birder relax and enjoy the process.
Birding Ecosse takes care of everything. You get yourself to the Grant Arms Hotel in Grantown. Next morning collect your bag lunch and hit the road. Somehow there’s room in the car for cakes and fresh fruit and cold drinks along with coffee and tea. If you are overnighting at another location, David includes that too. And meals. So, really, all you have to do is show up with your binoculars.
My first contact with Birding Ecosse was in 2016. Since then, dozens of days trips, two extended stays in the Uists and a week in Andalusia last year. Plans are underway for next year and for 2021. I cannot give a better recommendation than that
The best birding, the best landscapes, the best companionship! Dave is special. He is an expert in birding and wildlife but beyond that his observational skills include getting to know and understand the interests and needs of those lucky enough to have him as a guide. My husband has mobility challenges and Dave was attentive and responsive to his needs without making a “fuss” . He made sure our son got to see asmany birds as possible all the while telling stories and sharing jokes that made us laugh so hard we cried! Don’t miss out! Meet Dave and see places and birds you would never see on your own while having the time of your life! All smiles!! We will be back (that is if he will tolerate us again!)
A fantastic day of birding with Dave. He is an excellent guide who introduced us to new places to visit, gave us a wide variety of habitats within just one day and showed us beautiful countryside. His passion for birding is apparent and infectious.
We saw a number of new species of bird. In particular, we had wanted to see a Great Crested Tit which Dave found for us on our first stop!
Excellent weather, an expert guide, beautiful countryside, good companions, lots of banter and most of the target birds seen: ospreys, golden eagle, black-throated diver, red-throated diver, red grouse, black grouse, snow bunting to name just a few. Dave is a great host and guide, with ready answers to all the questions thrown at him by the group. If you are a Canon owner (like me), be prepared for some light-hearted stick, as Dave is a Nikon man. Based on this trip, I would unhesitatingly recommend Birding Ecosse, whether you are an expert birder or a novice as I am
I have been out with Birding Ecosse quite a few times they always seem better every time every thing is laid on from drinks to Telescopes and they really can find the birds and some amazing places. PH Apr 19
Yet another trip to share the delights of the birds and the wisdom of Dave!
Dave Slater is an ornithological magician, he seeming contours up species you want to see. His knowledge of Highland birding areas is encyclopaedic and his patience with us lesser mortals is endless.
Our 5 day tour gave us sightings of 104 species of birds with an additional 10 species of mammals.
Too many highlights to itemise but a boat trip complete with dolphin escort to Troup head must rank up there with gannets diving round the boat.
A Pelagic trip to the Outer Hebrides also gave us close up views of Kittiwakes being harried by Icelandic Skuas.
Multiple Osprey including 2 on a nest also ranks as a star occasion.
Not only the above but local knowledge, history, geology and meteorology all figure in the package.
Dave arranges accommodation at the very comfortable Grant Arms Hotel in Grantown on Spey with excellent Breakfasts and amazing evening meals.
Can’t recommend too highly! June 19
Hi Dave, Many thanks for a very enjoyable tour in the Highlands. Great company and some stunning birds, over 95 species, and don’t worry, I’ve not mentioned the dolphins. The call of the Bonxie is etched in my memory. Organisation and accommodation both excellent. RC June 19
Hi Dave,
I would just like to thank you again for a really super trip, which I enjoyed greatly.
In addition to photos of the slavonian grebe that I am unlikely to better I also saw a number of ‘lifers’ and obtained several ‘best-top-date’ shots. ID May 19
Hi Dave,
Thanks for the time and trouble you took with us and also the photos. It was a great trip I thoroughly enjoyed it. DF Apr 19
Thank you for another super holiday with Birding Ecosse. I had a good time and saw some great birds. PV Apr19
Thank you also for all the photos coming through. LR Apr 19
Thanks again for a brilliant couple of days, beautiful birds, lovely locations and great banter. I thoroughly enjoyed it. SG Apr 2109
Dave, thank you again for all your work with us for our birding trip to Scotland. It was such a joy, and I loved every minute of it.
I just wanted to let you know that I saw 40 new species over the three days we were there.
The only disappointment about birding with Ecosse Dave was having our two days together come to an end. Subsequent guides now have a high bar to match!
We had 2 full days together, with crazy weather to manœuvre around – but Dave made it all happen seamlessly. We’d be driving down some small road and he’d pull in to some small path, saying “let’s check here for crossbills.” Or “I can hear the red grouse – let’s give a look at this moor” (in his lovely Scottish English, which we Americans loved!).
Saw lovely snow buntings in the Cairngorms despite a blizzard blowing in; peeked through “snow grains” at a little grebe from the most meticulously constructed blind I’d ever seen, and had tea and jokes in perfect sunshine at the Moray Firth…
We’re already discussing when we can bird w/“Captain Pugwash” (he does have a flying pig mascot on his dashboard ) again. Could not have anticipated how much fun this experience would be!
PS, 21 birds brand-new to my life list!
Fantastic two days birding the Highlands. David was an awesome guide who had lots of information at his fingertips. He took the two of us through the inland and to the coast. We saw the red grouse, lapwings, shags, crested tit, and many, many others. He paced each day. Had tea breaks, gourmet lunches, and lots of laughs. Trip included stay at Grant Arms Hotel and good. Top of the line. Fantastic. PV March 2019
Birding Ecosse, The Uists, Outer Hebrides
“White-tailed Eagle approaching from the north,” Tony called out. Binoculars up we focused on the large bird headed right toward us. What happened next is seared in my mind’s eye. Shorebirds scattered as the predator flew closer and lower. The eagle circled around the horse-shoe shaped bay looking for a meal. The sole remaining bird in the bay was a fulmar bobbing on the surface, maybe 50 meters from the cliff edge where we stood. The eagle flew straight at the fulmar. Legs extended forward, talons out, the eagle grabbed the fulmar by the head and kept right on flying. The fulmar was dead instantly; one does not survive razor-like talons to the head. The eagle then flew north, landed on some rocks, rearranged the heavy bird in his claws and took off.
Three of us birders saw this through binoculars, two random bicyclists saw it with the naked eye and David Slater through his camera lens. Yes, the photographs are stunning. If they are not yet posted on Birding Ecosse website, they soon will be.
This five-minute drama unfolded on day four of our Uists excursion. At Stinky Bay (named by locals for rotting seaweed odor) on the North Atlantic coast of Benbecula. Not Stinky Bay when we were there; rather Spectacular Bay.
Hard to top that but there were dozens of other moments that would make any birder’s heart race. The out-of-place Mediterranean Gull that David spotted in a flock of gulls at Eoligarry Beach on Barra. Yet another White-tailed Eagle sitting on a sandbar behind the Co-op Supermarket on Benbecula. Short-eared Owl on a North Uist fence post, 10 meters from our vehicle near Tigharry. Shorebird aficionados would swoon over the variety we saw on beaches, fields and the machair.
The scenery from Berneray to Vatersay includes turquoise water, sugar sand beaches and dramatic cliffs. Villages seem to be posing for artists or photographers. Ferry rides offer pelagic birding. Barra was probably my favorite island, Eriskay running a close second.
We stayed in Carinish at the Temple View Hotel. Small, friendly hotel with cozy bar and hearty dinners and breakfasts. They also provided daily boxed lunches which were better than anyone expected.
Added benefit was the drive from and return to Grantown-on-Spey, birding all the way. Including a few stops on Skye and pelagics on the ferry from Uig on Skye to Lochmaddy on North Uist.
Birding Ecosse takes care of all the practicalities; hotels, ferries, transport, meals and the portable barista station at the back of the Flying Pig (Birding Ecosse’s vehicle; remember Captain Pugwash?) David makes these trips easy for his fellow-travelers. He makes it seem effortless and we know it is not.
Birding Ecosse is the main reason that I return to the Highlands and Islands each summer. This was my seventh outing with David (including Andalusia last April) and we are both still laughing. Will be booking again for 2019. And if that includes a return to the Uists, that would be just fine.
Hi Dave, Thanks again for the lovely holiday, great birds and fun SC Aug 18
Dear Dave, I am now safely back home but missing the Highlands and a great chap showing us all sorts of interesting and beautiful things!! Thank you so much for such a happy and wonderful time. VS Aug 18
We booked hoping to see Dotterel but closure of the Cairngorm funicular for maintenance ruled this out. Dave emailed us with the offer of cancellation but we decided to go ahead anyway.
Glad we did, a day trip to Handa Island gave us our first view of Arctic Skua as well as Bonxies both close and clear. A magical day, the long journey flying by with the interesting facts, conversation and banter. Common Gull up close, Slavonian Grebe pair with 2young, delightful family of Goldeneye, various waders etc taking the two day total to 46 without chasing around for numbers but having time to observe and learn.
Our 5th trip with Birding Ecosse will be back next year to see if we can see a Dotterel.
Not only birds but also 3species of deer, common lizard and loads of orchids! G&J June 2018
Dear Dave We’d like to thank you for a really enjoyable and informative few days on your bird tour. We were very taken with the spectacular inland areas of this part of Scotland you showed us, and your great introduction to birding in the area.We lingered on Wednesday finding it quite difficult to leave, and will hopefully soon be back. T&J May 2108
This is the first time I have been on a trip/tour with Birding Ecosse The days out are always well organised this trip was even better we got away right on time and from then on it all went very well saw all the interesting areas for wildlife with some fantastic views The Uists are wonderful with wild life that is missing from the mainland even the weather was good sunny but so cold – April 2018
Birding with Dave is always a pleasure. Latest trip to Uist was no exception, great birding, banter, organisation and, luckily, weather. Looking forward to our next adventure with Birding Ecosse. – Apr 2018
Birding Ecosse is based in the Highlands of Scotland but has established creds for birding in Spain. What you need to do right now is email birdingecosse@hotmail.co.uk
and get yourself on the list for the next birding adventure in southern Spain.
Have just returned to US from an extraordinary week of non-stop birding, immersion into remote Andalusia countryside and lots of laughs with exceptional birders who do not take themselves too seriously. Last summer in the Highlands I learned that when you sign on with BE/David Slater you not only get his extraordinary expertise but that of the other birders in your small group as well. David attracts skilled birders. A mediocre birder on a good day, I felt like I was in an advanced avian seminar in Spain. Tony and Lynda and Richard, all from the UK, have birding skills and patience and experience that added immensely to the whole experience. Luis, Malaga native, lifelong birder and guide, repeatedly put us in the right place at the right time. He and David have teamed up previously and demonstrated a partnership that worked well on many levels. Scenic drives, exceptional birds and continuous good humor were punctuated with stops in obscure villages for morning coffee and traditional lunches in non-tourist restaurants.
Over four days of birding from Tarifa to Osuna to the mountains near Malaga, 131 species were seen. With the exception of Luis, all of us added to life lists.
Memorable moments include;
-Dozens of raptors migrating from Africa over the Mediterranean at the nearest point, about ten miles. Bonelli’s eagle, black kite, griffon vulture, short-toed eagle and more.
-Hundreds of Greater Flamingos feeding and breeding in the lakes and ponds at Fuente de Piedra. Among the stunning pink birds, black and whiskered terns, three varieties of grebes, avocets and stilts.
-On a little used dirt road, in olive groves, European bee-eaters, European rollers and my favorites, the Hoopoes. Same day, the azure winged magpie.
-Montagu’s harrier over expansive open fields of grain, great and little Bustards in same area.
-While lunching at Safo Beach bar near hotel, Tony spotted a flock of 60+ flamingos flying low along the shoreline. Even the bar regulars took notice with us.
-David will never forgive me if I don’t mention the White-headed duck. Oh, and the endangered Bald Ibis that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.
There’s more. So much more. You should see it for yourself.
Base of operations was the Melia Sol Hotel in Guadalmar, a suburb of Malaga. Right on the beach, with pool and all the amenities. Walking distance to spectacular birding at the mouth of the Guadalhorce river.
Do you travel for birding? Put this one on your list.
David Slater is a Scot to his core but he seems to have succeeded in giving his birdy persona a Spanish accent. Apr 2018
As usual we went to some interesting places David always seems to find places I have never been before. Had some really good birds including local rarities. If you are thinking of booking get in soon he is booking upcast for 2018 but its always worth trying to get in March 2018
I would just like to say thanks for a great day yesterday. We all had a fantastic time, Owen is really happy with his mug. I think we’ll be back again so hopefully we can have another day out. Hope things go well. JTD Feb 2018
We are so glad that we contacted David, from Birding Ecosse and booked a half day birding trip with him. Although we are keen bird watchers, we had never experienced going out with a guide and so didn’t know what to expect. Right from the start, David answered our emails promptly and was very flexible about what we might hope to see. In fact, we were lucky enough to see everything on our list including crested tits, golden eagles and a white tailed eagle. What we didn’t expect was to have coal tits feeding from our hands, captured on video, which was much appreciated. Thanks to David’s extensive knowledge of this area, we also saw red grouse and even a mountain hare! Apart from the excellent birding experience, David showed us some wonderful highland scenery and was great company throughout. We would certainly contact David again for another tour if we return to Scotland. We booked several months in advance which is advisable as David is very much in demand. Nov 17
Hi Dave – Thank you for all the fun we had last week!!! We really enjoyed all of it and am missing the company. J & A Oct 2017

I was one of the birders who recently went on the first Birding Ecosse to Spain and what a fantastic week it was. 130+ stunning different birds and the migration of thousands of raptors going south to Africa is a sight I will never forget.
In addition to the birding we had such fun with Dave Slater and his wife-to-be Lynda, the perfect hosts.
Visited the Highlands for two weeks in August-September, Based in Grantown-on-Spey. Birding primary motivation. Signed up for five days with Birding Ecosse. Would have done more had he been available. David Slater is a first class birder with a lively sense of humor and keen ability to read his clients.
David limits his tours to three guests which allows for birding tailored to level of obsession, quick pivots caused by weather or other surprises and adaptation to quirky birders. You know who you are.
Full birding days ranged all over the Highlands; the Moray Firth and due East to Troup Head, The Black Isle, Cairngorms National Park, dozens of lochs and hides and RSPB reserves. Highlight was the Caledonian Ferry MV Loch Seaforth from Ullapool to Stornoway, Outer Hebrides. Back and forth on the ferry for a total of six hours of stunning pelagic birding from the comfort of a well appointed ferry. Sooty and Manx Shearwaters, Storm Petrels, Gannets, Puffins, both Skuas, Guillemots, Razorbills. David was on top of it all, calling out what he spotted and just as excited as we were. Another highlight was Troup Head, the largest Gannet colony on mainland Scotland. First we trekked across fields of barley to the dizzying cliffs where thousands of Gannets of various ages filled the air with their cries. Then we boarded a sturdy little boat at MacDuff and motored east to see the colony from the water. Acres of craggy expanse covered by gannets, their nests and their young. It only gets better. On the return trip to MacDuff, a pod of 15 or more bottle nosed dolphins surrounded the boat, coming so close that long camera lenses were unnecessary. Very young dolphin calves, just a few days old, stuck closely to the adults. The boat captain killed the engine, the dolphins came closer and we were speechless in awe.
All of these trips include tailgating from the back of David’s SUV, usually while looking at some well populated birding habitat. He puts on his barista hat and makes coffee or tea. Cakes and biscuits are served. We do the same for lunch; bring your own. No time wasted. Birding never stops.
Nor do the laughs and good humor. As the days progressed running gags expanded in detail and hilarity. Yes, you had to be there.
A day with David Slater is a day of non-stop excellent birding, unexpected duck-filled ponds at the end of one-lane roads and the occasional glimpse of castle ruins (“Today’s culture on the right. That’s it.”) You will laugh, you will find yourself saying “Aye” instead of “Yes,” you will learn about threatened raptors, you will wonder how David found that White-tailed Eagle sitting in the rain atop Gruinard Island, you will call a Great Skua a Bonxie and you will wonder what the dreadful orange soft drink is that David is drinking. At some point, you will know that you must return to the Highlands and Birding Ecosse.
Practical info:
-sturdy shoes or boots a must
-warm hat, scarf, gloves, extra fleece or sweater. Yes, it’s August. It is also Scotland.
-water resistant, wind proof jacket with hood.
-good binoculars (David has scope and tripod)
-camera, if part of your birding experience
-lunch, water.
-peanut butter M&M’s for David, if you are visiting from US. Not available in UK.
Check out the Birding Ecosse website, newsletter, etc. for further details on the August 2017 trips described above. And what’s coming up for those brave and hardy enough to go birding in Scotland in winter.
Thank you for a great holiday, amazing birds, lovely memories and fun!
Dave, We really enjoyed yesterday. Most of the species we saw are life birds for me but I have to compare latin names to be sure. Its obvious you are extremely knowledgeable abt birds but your easy going personality also added to the day. Many thanks. Dick & Jean Aug 2017
Dear Dave, just to say a very heartfelt “thank you” for the holiday we both really enjoyed. We saw some wonderful birds and great scenery and from what I have gathered once home, we were so much luckier with our weather. I checked my list on the train and surprisingly I ended up with 108. Whether that was wishful thinking or finger trouble I am not sure! But it was a truly enjoyable few days and thank you for all you did to make it so. Again many thanks, all best wishes, from Val. July 2017
Hi Dave, Just to say thank you for organising the ” tour” to Skye and Uist. I had a fabulous time – still recovering – and look forward to my next holiday?? (Edit: it was not a holiday, how many times do I have to say this 🙂 ) LR July 2017
Hi David, just to say many thanks for a cracking day out – great birds – great company. DP June 2017
Many thanks for a wonderful day yesterday. All the best. Allan. June 2017
The Three Mutineers!
Thanks for a Fab weekend, great pictures in the Newsletter! F&A May 2017
Dear Dave, We have had a brrrrrilliiant (edit, in ref to how we Scots roll our “Rrrrrrrrrrs”) time here in the Highlands with you. Our first visit (and yes we were lucky with the weather) but there is so much variety in the birds, wildlife and landscape that we could repeat the whole thing tomorrow. We shall return! All good wishes to you and Lynda. L&S Visted May 2017
We spent a very full day with Dave who picked us up at our hotel and we were blessed with some gorgeous Scottish weather. His knowledge of the area and the birds is outstanding, long distance raptors are difficult to ID for the average birder and we went to places we would never have found on our own. Genuine nice guy who is a pleasure to spend the day with and a constant supply of coffee and Tunnocks tea cakes – happy days.
Karen enjoying the Scottish sun!
Thanks for fabulous trip Dave, surpassed all expectations! MH March 2017
Hi Dave,
Thank you so much for a great day out bird watching today 11 of which were lifers.
See you again on another trip no doubt – DP March 2017
Just spent two wonderful days with Dave. Nearly cancelled because off because of poor weather forecast, but so pleased I didn’t. The variable weather provided many different opportunities to see different birds. Highlight was mountain glen covered in snow with Sea Eagle and Golden Eagle flying together chased by two Ravens
“A very good guide he can really find the wildlife”
I went out with Birding Ecosse 3 times over Christmas and New Year twice there were 3 people on the tour but David seems to be able to keep different interests happy. The coffee and cakes went down well in the cold weather and there was some really good birds and other wildlife
I have just finished my second two-day tour with Dave Slater of Birding Ecosse and once again he provided another memorable experience searching for birds in Scotland.
He is extremely knowledgeable and has great expertise in finding and identifying birds and, equally importantly,is great company and does all he can to ensure you have a great time.
Loads of laughs, tea, biscuits,Tunnocks Tea Cakes and even mince pies this time…..oh,and the odd bird along the way! He has so far provided me with 14 new species and hopefully even more on future trips.
I would heartily advise anybody, expert or novice, who is new to the area to book a trip with Birding Ecosse. It will save you a lot of time and effort as well as enjoying the unique experience and company of Dave Slater.
I am already planning my next trips with him and hope we can track down my elusive White-tailed Eagle and maybe one day get to go up Cairn Gorm without wind and low cloud thwarting us……not even Dave can influence the Scottish mountain weather!
Dave is my kind of birder! I love standing and staring, drinking in the ambience and all aspects of the scenery, just waiting for things to happen and watching avidly when they do.Dave is not one to rush you on to the next thing, to slot up a given number of sightings. He is happy to adapt to your pace, frequently providing hot coffee and carbo-shots to ward off the cold (minus 7 in Findhorn Valley). He is so at home in his own domain, knowing some beautiful sequestered spots, with an abundance of stunning birds such as bramblings and waxwings that I almost felt I’d wandered into a parallel world; one where you just mention a bird and there it is. It is good to be with someone so deeply acquainted with the countryside and all in it, and Dave has watched birds in this area since he was knee-high to a grasshopper warbler. Even so his enthusiasm and delight remain full-on and infectious, as also does his sense of humour. We had one moment of ‘twitch,’ looking for an American wigeon, a first for me; and he even let me find it!
A fabulous three days; not my first trip with Birding Ecosse and I shall be back for more.
We returned for our third long weekend with Dave. Again he delivered on all aspects. It may be birding in the title but we wanted to watch an otter and he delivered!so enjoyable, so flexible, if you are interested in birds at any level this experience is highly recommended, whatever your level, you will learn, Dave is a natural teacher and an amazing source of knowledge.
We will definitely return for a fourth time!
I was bought this experience for my 60th birthday by my children. We are enthusiastic about birds but know very little, Dave was friendly and patient with our lack of knowledge and found bar-tailed godwits on our first day out – a bird which I had wanted to see simply because I love the name! We had 3 fantastic days – great scenery, verbal wit and, of course, knowledge about the birds and the environment! Dave, how can you tell which bird it is when it just flies over in a flash! A great experience! Thank you. Julie and Alan
We booked our two days with Dave 3 months before our 5 week trip to the Highlands. Dave was near the end of our trip, and we had been birding constantly before meeting up with him.
Day 1: Dave was 5 minutes early for our pick up, and even arranged a personal errand for us into his schedule. As we drove, and Dave heard about where we had already been, his heart kind of sank, as many of those places were on his itinerary. Nevertheless, he managed to take us to many places we had not seen, and even took us back to places we had been, and found more than we ever did, or could.
The highlight of the two day outing was on day 2, the Red Kite feeding station. What a feast for the eyes, and my camera. It really was special.
After driving around Scotland for almost 4 weeks, Dave managed to explain most of what we had seen and not understood, traditions we would never have known about, bird habits and habitats, and so much more.
Dave has been a birder since the age of 7, and he has forgotten more than I will ever know. What a wonderful guide, conversationalist, and host. The coffee and biscuit breaks were all special, and we had quite a few.
If birding is your quest, do yourself a favor and hire Dave, you will not regret it.
Birding in Invergordon, Scotland, Jul 23, 2016
Posted by admin on 04 Aug 2016 at 06:09 pm | Tagged as: birding, Wandering Members
Maureen and I just returned from a 12 day cruise to Northern Europe with friends and family. Bob and I are avid birders and Maureen is fast catching up. Bob is the father of Jeff, the husband on our younger daughter, Danielle. Jeff is the one who instigated the venture. Prior to the trip, on the recommendation of Ken Gunn, I organized a day of birding on shore with Dave Slater, owner of Birding-Ecosse. The ship docked at Invergordon and it turns out to be near where Dave lives.
Invergorden is near Inverness, and near to the well-known Loch Ness with everyone’s favorite, elusive “monster”.
He picked us up as we disembarked the ship about 8:00 a.m., and returned us to the ship at 5:30 p.m. We worked our way from Invergordon North to Portmahomack and Tarbat Ness. We passed several different habitats from villages to beaches and wetlands to uplands. We even saw the sea. Lots of variety. There was a preserve (missed the sign) which had a small lake and grasses where we saw Slavonian and Little Grebes as well as Goosander with chicks. Then there was one (Tollie Red Kites Preserve) where the primary purpose was to feed Red Kites in hope of attracting more attention to them and getting more donations and volunteers. Later,we stopped at the Udale Bay Nature Reserve where we saw lots of Lapwings, gulls, Oystercatchers, Dunlins and other shorebirds.
In all, we got over 60 species and, since none of us had really birded Europe before, at least 55 were life birds.
A little about Dave. He picked out a niche of birders who do not want to be in a van where only half may get to see a bird. He uses his private car, a Ford about the size of a RAV4. Maximum him and three passengers. You get a personal experience. He is focused on giving you a personal birding tour. As we got on with the process of organizing the trip, he told me in email where we would go and prospective bird sightings. The cost of 110 Pounds Sterling included pick-up and drop-off, all guiding, tea and coffee and snacks, bad jokes and good scenery. Pack your sense of humor. It was a laugh a minute (often at our expense) during the drive, but all birding at stops (Except at lunch and snack stops, of course).
I can’t recommend Dave enough. As far as off-ship “adventures” went, we agreed this was the highlight of our cruise.
Contact him at birdingecosse@hotmail.co.uk. It will be a day you will remember for a long time. His website is www.birdingecosse.co.uk
Thanks, Dave, and thanks to Ken Gunn for recommending.
Hi Dave,
Just wanted to say a massive thank you for your time, tea and expertise on Thursday! We all had such an amazing time and couldn’t stop laughing on the way home. Great banter!
I knew that I would enjoy myself, but as non-birdy people I was hoping beyond hope that Joe and Steve would also have a good time. They definitely did!
CK July 16
Hello David……..Thanks for another wonderful and enjoyable day out …lots of interesting and useful information….and laughs. We really enjoy your company, Dave…thanks a lot.
Despite the not so good weather David the guide found lots of interesting wildlife mainly birds including some rarities his GSH kept us happy as did the tea and coffee also the biscuits. If you don’t have your own telescope he has an excellent one I think some times it has an inbuilt tracker! He picks up usually in Grantown but will do other places but there sometimes may be a charge for it
A highly enjoyable birding excursion. Dave seems to know every back road in Scotland, and where to find the greatest number and variety of birds. After experiencing a train delay, a late snow storm, and the cancellation of his two other clients, I was afraid that my tour might be in jeopardy. Not even close! Dave called the hotel to make sure I arrived safely, collected me on time the next morning, and showed the same amount of enthusiasm as if he were guiding a V.I.P. He is extremely congenial, and communicates his passion for the natural history and human history of Scotland.
Having just arrived back at the Grant Arms Hotel, after my second full day of birding with Dave Slater of Birding Ecosse, I have to write this review while everything is still fresh in my mind. We have travelled everywhere, from the top of Cairngorm to Cromarty on the Black Isle and have seen about 60 different birds, from Golden Eagle to Coal Tit – the latter actually taking seed from my hand! Not forgetting the mountain hare, red squirrel, reindeer, feral goats, brown hare and red deer – even though they’re not birds, Dave found them.
He knows where to find the birds and everything there is to know about them. He will adapt the tour to look for that special bird you want to see.
If you’re thinking of birding in Scotland, think Birding Ecosse – you won’t regret it!
I can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed this experience. I have wanted to come here for many years so having someone to “guide” me to the best places, to see the best birds (and animals!)has been superb. Thank you! CP March 2016
I have just returned from another fantastic birding weekend with Dave of Birding Ecosse (my second trip). Dave’s knowledge of birds and the local area is second to none and the three days flew past far too quickly as we visited a range of habitats in the Moray area and then further North. The scenery in this area is awe inspiring, and although we had what Dave calls ‘liquid sunshine’ (rain) on the first two days this did not detract from the experience. Just be prepared for all kinds of weather! Some of the many highlights for me were catching my first Snow Buntings at Cairngorm, being enthralled at the Golden Eagle soaring above the hills (another first) and having a lovely packed lunch at Loch Fleet (with the sun shining this time) whilst watching the huge variety of waders. Dave is an excellent guide, setting things up in the scope for you to see, and sharing his wealth of bird knowledge in a way which is interesting and accessible. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided frequently and much enjoyed (as is the cheery banter that Dave also supplies!). I thoroughly recommend Birding Ecosse, you won’t be disappointed, and I am already thinking about my next trip!
Having always had a casual interest in birds, I received a voucher for a half day tour for my birthday..and what an amazing present it turned out to be.
First of all, many many thanks to Dave, right from the word go he makes you feel at complete ease. He is an incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide, as well as a top guy.
The tour was incredible, and the hours just flew by…too quickly! I honestly do not know how Dave spotted all the incredible sights that we seen. I promise you that you will be blown away by the incredible new world you will experience through the scope – it just has to be experienced!
I am now looking to planning my next trip with Dave and Birding Ecosse for my Dad’s 70th birthday.
I came north to celebrate my 65th birthday with 2 full days birding.I chose Birding Ecosse since Dave Slater offered a bespoke small group approach. Two days on and I’ve encountered a range of birds from mountain and coast and return home tomorrow more than satisfied. So come north and enjoy birding with Dave Slater. I’ve got to return to bag that elusive Sea Eagle. See you there.
I am embarrassed that it has taken me three months to write this review.
My wife and I spent a brilliant, informative and fun day out with Dave Slater of Birding Ecosse. He drove us all over an area I thought I new very well. Dave knows it better! And he knows where his beloved birds hang out. I had reservations as a casual birder of spending a whole day on the subject. How wrong I was. Can’t remember a day when we had so much fun, laughs, AND learned so much. We covered a lot of ground and Dave’s enthusiasm is so infectious. Even the best birder couldn’t hope to have seen what we saw– Slavonian grebes to Black grouse, Ringed ousel to Osprey, not to mention the Black throated divers, Mergansers and Eagles, etc etc. The only downside is that we can see our friends eyes glazing over when we start up yet again on our new passion.
“Birding Ecosse – fantastic experience”
2 1/2 days and 77 species! What a wonderful time. Not only did David deliver target birds such as the crested tit, eider ducks, skua and osprey, he led us in short order through rugged coastlines, hidden lochs, river deltas, secluded feeders, mountain tops and spectacular valleys -we saw more of scenic Scotland with David than 10 days on our own! The care, comfort and conversation truly made our trip memorable and we cannot thank him enough. Staying at the Grant Arms was a treat with fantastic food and staff. We highly recommend David and Birding Ecosse. Gerry and Jeannette,Vancouver Island, Canada
“Birding Scotland”
My family did a cruise around The UK and Ireland the last two weeks of July, 2015. At Invergordon, Scotland I broke away from the family and went birding. I had made arrangements with Birding Ecosse to take me out. Dave picked me up just after 7:00 AM when I got off the ship and from there led me through a wonderful day. In 10 hours, in spite of intermittent downpours of rain, we visited 7 habitats and saw 61 species. In that part of Scotland the countryside changes rapidly and one can get to seemingly remote areas quite easily if you know the country as Dave does. The result was that I did not feel rushed at all. We ate our lunch in high country overlooking a beautiful valley and stopped to scan bays, lakes, rivers and hillsides at our leisure.
I highly recommend Birding Ecosse and look forward to getting back to Scotland to go on Dave’s pelagic trip.
Even if you’re only remotely interested in birds, a couple of days with Birding Ecosse will blow you away. A brilliant guide; David has a fanastic sense of humor – bad jokes aside we were expertly gudied through mountains and seashore. Never thought I’d see goldfinch, greenfinch, Slavonian grebes, and thousands of gannets all in a day. Doesn’t get any better! N&M Aug 2015 – Dubai.
David is really excellent guide for levels of knowledge as well as his birding expertise he also has a good knowledge of local history which makes a trip out with him even more interesting. His local area knowledge is good too he has taken me places I would never have though of visiting with great results. I have been out with him a number of times and he has always found interesting birds as well as something to laugh about. PH July 2015. UK
Although my husband and I had been looking forward to the Birding Ecosse experience for MONTHS, the two days with Dave (and Peter) exceeded our expectations in so many ways. I was the newbie on the trip – not much of a birder. Yet the conversations in the car, the local history and anecdotes provided by Dave and the beautiful coast and Highlands engaged me every minute. My husband Bill is an experienced and avid birder and benefitted from and loved the way Dave shared his knowledge and expertise while providing opportunity to greatly expand his life list and get some unbelievable photos. Our different “English” (from Americans, a Glaswegian and a Brit) was a continual source of fun. “Why are we talking about Maryland?” said I, as Dave and Peter joked about the latter’s desire to see a “Merlin”. A wonderful time. Happy Birthday, Dave. Hope to visit again soon. USA

Having had enjoyable birding outings with Dave before I was tempted to take one of the Birding Ecosse short breaks specifically to visit Handa Island. We were lucky in the two days to have one with perfect weather and the visit more than lived up to my expectations. Apart from the beauty of the place the experience of walking amongst Arctic and Great Skuas was unforgettable, then there were the red-throated divers, puffin and densely packed cliff faces with a variety of nesting seabirds. Thanks Dave – here’s to next time! UK

We arrived at the Grant Arms Hotel on Friday afternoon and met up with Dave in the evening.
Chatting to him it soon became clear that he was more than happy to adapt his suggested weekend itinerary so suit us if we wanted to visit specific places or try to see specific birds. The fact that he only takes a maximum of three guests at a time allows this flexibility.
Dave certainly knew where to find the birds that we wanted to see and was quite happy to try a second, or even third, location if we failed at the first one. Overall this meant that we saw virtually everything we had hoped for (and many others as well). We saw just over 100 species in the three and a half days we were with Dave, and yet this was achieved at a comfortable pace without any suggestion of being hurried around.
Dave’s humour and birding skills were both welcome and we were taken to several locations that we would never have found if we hadn’t had the benefit of his local knowledge.
Tea and chocolate biscuits were in plentiful supply and he always managed to find scenic locations to stop for a break.
We hope make a return visit to the area again in the winter and would thoroughly recommend his services to anyone who wants a relaxed, but very informative, guide to the area’s birds.

My wife and I spent just a morning with Dave from Birding Ecosse and saw and learnt so much. We were taken to the Black Isle and Beauly Firth and were impressed not only with the wildlife, but also Dave’s knowledge (local and birds). The bird life in this area is amazing and we seemed to hit a day with good weather and high activity. We certainly look forward to a longer visit next time.

We should have written sooner to thank you for all your efforts on our behalf and for ensuring we saw as much of the wildlife as possible. Thank you for managing to get the cappa to pose so beautifully. An absolute highlight. Many thanks also for the drinks, teas, coffees, dunnocks and soup.
We hope to be with you again later in the year to take a trip on the west side. D&O March 2015

This was a most enjoyable and well organized trip. The hotel was good, with friendly staff and excellent food. David was impressively well informed and always willing to take time to explain and answer questions. Things went as planned and there were no unpleasant surprises. And hot coffee on demand was a nice touch. In addition, David somehow delivered good weather and lots of birds!
One suggestion: being unfamiliar with the Scottish Highlands, a high level map of our daily trips with a few place names would have been useful to me, since I like to know where I’m going. DB August 2014
I thought it was an excellent trip, enjoyable throughout. I appreciated Dave’s enthusiasm and clear love of his subject, and delight in sharing it all with us. A bonus in my view was his intimate knowledge of his own “patch,” and the birds within it. All leavened with his particular brand of humour! MC August 2014
We booked a mid-week break with Dave and he did the rest. Hotel, meals, driving, history, stories, jokes, and BIRDS, all supplied. Take a good map if you want to find those corners of Scotland again. A great trip, birds aplenty, laughs galore. We will be back. Tony & Fiona, 2014
I booked Dave (Birding Ecosse) for a long weekend in July. The moment I began corresponding with Dave I knew I would be in safe hands. His emails to discuss the details of the trip were informatative and encouraging. Dave went over and above and out of his way to ensure our party of three had an excellent introduction to bird watching in Scotland. I in particular had a number of species that I really wanted to see and apart from two I ticked all the rest. The highlight of the trip was the daily ‘banter’ his vast knowledge not only from a birding perspective but his historical knowledge was impressive. Dave arranged every detail of the itinerary and was receptive to our requests throughout the day. The trip report and final bird list were email to us within 48 hours of the completion of the trip. Thanks Dave.
The trip was great value for money and I can highly recommend Dave to you if you are interested in small groups as the undivided attention and down to earth Dave was refreshing.

Dave Slater is a star birding guide who offered us a spectacular day of avian, historic, cultural, and environmental highlights. As an ornithologist/bird researcher with a relative newbie to birding, the pair of us represented a challenge–but we were royally entertained, educated, and engaged for 8 glorious hours that were interspersed with tea breaks, scenic panoramas, laugh-out-loud humour, and spectacular views of life-list and familiar species. Thanks for a brilliant day from Aviemore to the coast, mountain glens, and back, Dave. We saw the ptarmigan families on the Cairngorm and loved the professional-quality photos you emailed us. You are the BEST! B&K July 2014
I had a wonderful day with Dave, he has a vast knowledge of birds and information about their habitats, habits and life cycles. I am still learning but he never makes me feel silly when I mistake a house sparrow for something else! We counted 61 different species in a day and I was rewarded with some stunning photos that Dave took.
The days out are worth it for the scenery alone and the bird watching is stunning. JM June 2014
We have two great morning trips with Dave, including superb close views of Ptarmigan today. Dave is very knowledgable about birds and the best place to see them. So would recommend very highly and would go with Birding Ecosse again next time we visit the Highlands. P & R July 2014
We booked Dave (Birding Ecosse) for an afternoon / early evening to help us explore and hopefully see a few birds including divers and eagles. Before the trip he devised and agreed with us an itinerary. His birding and local knowledge was excellent and he was great company, the 5hrs went far too quickly. Not only did he find the main birds we wished to see he also gave us a good sight seeing tour and much bird and wildlife watching advice and background of the area. A Golden eagle was seen at distance and we think Dave was more disappointed than us at not seeing this wonderful bird closer up. We highly recommend Dave if you need a birding guide who offers great knowledge, advice and value. D & K July 2014
Dave, thanks for a great day JM June 2014 (Scottish west Coast day tour)
Wonderful value, Relaxed environment, not intimidating for a novice, Thank you!! JB June 2014 (edit, you’re welcome John it was a fantastic day on Handa, enjoy this exciting time with your birdwatching, and remember everyone has to start somewhere and hopefully your trip with Birding Ecosse has whetted your appetite! Any questions then just drop me an e-mail)
We had an amazing few days, everything we hoped for with some wonderful bonuses (seals, dolphins, boat trip) Highlights were Purple Sandpipers in summer plumage, casual post sitting Ospreys, beautiful Slavonian Grebes and of course the 25 minutes spent watching the male Caper (edit well spotted Graham!) May 2014
Dear David we have found you excellent to deal with and would highly recommend you. We have really appreciated your customer service and your willingness to sort things out including the accommodation. Thanks for all the help and hope you have a successful birding trip and wish you all the best. G and J (comments received after booking a gift voucher for a Christmas present) Dec 2013
Having used Birding Ecosse in the past, I already knew how good David is at what he does.
So when I planned a return trip to the highlands to see some birds I hadn’t seen a few years ago, I knew David at Birding Ecosse was the man to call.
Sure enough he had a slot spare and I snapped it up straight away. Fast forward a few months and there I was at the Grant Arms Hotel in Grantown saying hello to David, ready to embark on a great birding adventure. And that’s exactly what I got.
A full day of fantastic birding, seeing such great birds and lots of new ones, thanks to David’s immense knowledge of the local area and of the birds themselves.
He’s great to talk to and you can always guarantee a good laugh with him.
But the best thing is the day is completely tailored around you and what you want to see. Even if you just want a day out birding only to see whatever is about, with no target species, that too is catered for.
Cant recommend David enough. But don’t take my word for it. Give him a call. I know he’d love to hear from you!

What a fabulous Xmas present recieved from Graham’s sister, Jill.
We had a wonderful day with Dave who tailored the trip to our needs superbly. The whole experience from 8am until our departure at 5.30 was packed with thrilling sightings of birds we had hoped to see. We particularly enjoyed the black throated divers, osprey, ptarmigan, Slavonian grebes, crossbill and black grouse. We had a lot of laughs with Dave who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the bird world. Linked with this, the scenic tour was outstanding and we will definitely be coming back for more. We highly recommend Birding Ecosse.

We both enjoyed our two day Mid week special with Birding Ecosse. Good fun and I did learn how to identify some of the “offshore” birds. We would not have seen 76 species had we been on our own. Extra good that David (B) could really birdwatch without driving. Extra bonuses of Tunnocks biscuits with Tea/Coffee! Keep up the good work! D&O B March 2014
(Edit: it was a great couple of days with you both, the Slavonian Road will always bring a smile to my face!)
David was extremely knowledgeable in theory and practice. He was very relaxed and humorous and by the end end of the day, albeit shortish because of insufficient daylight, we felt we had known him for years. Super day – can’t wait to do it again. DI Dec 2013
Dear Dave. Just to say thank you for a really enjoyable morning and sharing your bird and wildlife knowledge with you, just the scenery on the trip to the Findhorn Valley was a real treat let alone seeing all the different birds and of course the Feral goats which were part of the attraction of that particular trip. Impressed that tour can take place on a 1:1 basis JR Nov 2013
( Dear Jean, thank you for the kind comments, it was a great morning to go out, I’m glad you mentioned the 1:1 as that was the whole ethos for starting Birding Ecosse as not everyone is comfortable being in large groups in minibuses (although conversely some people prefer that) Hopefully see you again soon on your local patch at Findhorn for a guided walk. Dave)
53 species (2 lifers) beat that! Excellent identification/context information (particularly differentiation between similar species eg Scoters, Common Gull, Shag/Cormorant) Great personal interaction, sense of humour and knowledge of local history. DS Oct 2013
Thanks for an enjoyable and informative morning. RG Oct 2013
We all enjoyed the two half days that we went out with you. Informative, a lovely sense of humour. Great knowledge of the area and the birds around. We will certainly recommend to our friends. Aug/Sep 2013
(Edit, I was a great couple of days, and the sharp eyed spotter Sasha done a great job! Look forward to meeting you all again)
We had a morning with Dave Slater from Birding Ecosse which involved two trips in the morning with. Breakfast in between. Considering we had never met Dave before we found that within 5 minutes it was if we had known him for ages. He had a wealth of knowledge on birds, local wildlife and local history. I would class my wife and I as novice bird watchers and found Dave was happy to share his knowledge and give advice and tips for us to use in the future. He is flexible as to where he goes and what he looks for so is not restricted to a rigid itinerary and is happy to listen to what his guests want. He is very easy company and even was helpful when discussing my future purchase of a scope to replace the star gazing one I have at present. You can book him direct through his website birding Ecosse but can also book him through the Grant Arms Hotel at Grantown on Spey. Dave provides an excellent service and is well worth booking for a trip. P&K May 2013
Thank you for a great day out with you last week. We enjoyed the birding and the banter and David’s still talking about the Ptarmigan as well as the close views of the Black-throated Diver. D&M May 2013
Another great day out, thanks again Dave. AW April 2013
A delightful two days, our sincere thanks. D&J M April 2013
David was a friendly knowledgable, enthusiastic guide who conveyed his passion for the area onto us, so much so we would like to do it again, perhaps at a different time of year. Despite the fact I didn’t see everything on my list it didn’t matter, it was still a fun and enjoyable trip with stunning scenery and wildlife. E, P & G March 2013 (Edit, George, keep birding, it is a great hobby that will last a lifetime…… remember to write down your life list, you have seen some amazing birds so far!)
Thoroughly enjoyable very successful day in difficult circumstances, professionaly done. Would have no problem recommending you to friends. D&L March 2013
Brilliant Day and Geat company. KB – Bristol – Feb 2013
Thanks for a really great 2 days out with you the weather was not so good but you made it so interesting I sort of forgot about how bad the weather was. It’s true you often get good birds in poor weather and that really worked out. I will remember that Grey/Red Phalarope in the waves for a long time. PH Dec 2012

What makes these workshops so special (apart from the birds) is Daves personality. He obviously loves what he does, is a genuinely nice guy, gives me information in such interesting ways I actually manage to remember it and is infinitely patient. These workshops are excellent value for money. Thanks Dave. LB Various dates throughout 2012 (edit Thank you Lynda!)

Did a day trip with David from Birding Ecosse. Excellent day despite strong winds. His knowledge and expertise was immense and he was happy to share it in order to help you improve your own skill. He provided tea and biscuits and few good laughs too.

I had an absolutely fastastic day, and by the time I went through my notes carefully I had 62 species with no less than 8 (yes eight!!) lifers. I can also confirm not 1 or 2 but a whole telephone line full of the main target bird!! I will most definitely be back soon. RD Dalgetty Bay – April 2012.

Findhorn Valley – Golden Eagle Special – Half day tour: We both thought this was an excellent tour, both for the bird sightings and the rapport we had with David, who was very knowledgable and entertaining. The Findhorn Valley was really stunning and was further enhanced by the snow. All in all a fantastic time. IG and PH Leeds – December 2011.
Moray Firth – King Eider Special -Half day tour: Everything was good. Birding. Knowledge of area, wildlife and company. PH Cumbria – December 2011

Loch Fleet – Day tour – Loch Fleet was my third outing with Birding Ecosse. Once again this trip was informative, well planned, great value and good fun! I learned some valuable ID pointers and saw my first Whimbrel! RG Nethybridge – November 2011.
Findorn Valley and Chanory Point – Day Tour – Excellent Guiding. We felt relaxed and comfortable throughout. David took time to explain each bird in a way that made the identification memorable. SA Merseyside – October 2011.
